Kerry Roffe Conference

Glass and ceramics student Kerry Roffe was one of 5 to be awarded the Mike Davies Global Challenges scholarship.

Kerry used the scholarship to help travel all the way to Venice to attend the Art of Tomorrow Conference. “Being a Global Challenges scholarship recipient allowed me to immerse myself in a world where art and sustainability intersect, offering invaluable insights and experiences that will shape my future endeavours, “said Kerry.

The conference consists of panel sessions, conference and conversations. It brings together a wide range of international leaders and decision makers within the art sector, to examine the economic and social impact of art.

Kerry said, “One of my favourite sessions in the three-day conference was a stirring keynote by artist Thijs Biersteker, a pioneering environmental artist whose work I have long admired. He spoke about the role of art in making the invisible impacts of climate change visible, inspiring us to use our creative talents to foster environmental consciousness. His words resonated deeply with me, reaffirming my belief in the power of art to drive change”.

“One of the most unforgettable experiences was the field trip to Berengo Studios in Murano. As a glass and ceramics student, visiting this renowned glassmaking studio was a dream come true. We observed master glassmakers at work, blending traditional techniques with contemporary artistry. The studio’s commitment to sustainability, such as using recycled glass, was particularly inspiring. This visit highlighted the importance of preserving artisanal skills while adapting to modern environmental challenges. I was also entranced by the visit to the Jean Cocteau exhibition that we were fortunate enough to be given a private tour of by the Museum’s knowledgeable curator; so much inspiration!”.

“Attending the Art for Tomorrow conference 2024 was an eye-opening experience that reinforced my commitment to sustainability in my own artistic practice. The knowledge and inspiration I gained from this event will undoubtedly influence my work as I strive to create art that not only captivates but also advocates for a healthier planet. I am also more determined than ever since my attendance to realise my plans post-graduation to bring art to areas of social deprivation and to encourage those from working class backgrounds like me to consider art as a career. I am profoundly grateful to my sponsor Mike Davies who enabled my visit with the support of the team at the Development Office at the University of Sunderland for this invaluable opportunity”.
