Jack Patterson

BSc Mechanical Engineering 2015

Jack has landed a Graduate Engineering post straight out of University – but that hardly seems surprising given that last year he was named Placement Engineer of the Year.

Jack made a national impact after winning a prestigious award from the Royal Academy of Engineers, after a year’s placement with engineering firm Orwin – one of the largest automation and specialist machine builders in the UK.

After winning the regional award for Yorkshire and the North East, Jack went onto London where he presented his work in front of a panel of judges and took part in a networking event, before the results were then announced.

Jack helped deliver a £370,000 order to an overseas company that manufactures razor blades. He went on to work on other high profile projects and become an integral member of the design team.

“The company I worked for build machines for firms to assemble their products – automated equipment. My work was for a Turkish company who make razor blades.”

“I took on an old design which was a similar machine they made six years for ago for a previous product range. I redesigned the machine so it would produce the new part and improve some of the assembly processes.

“I was the first placement student they had ever taken on so it was a new thing for them. I worked across the business and ended up taking on design roles that normally a graduate would be doing.”

Now Jack is getting ready to start his new post as Graduate Engineer at CMP Products, part of British Engines, a leading global engineering group, based in Cramlington.
