Professor Robert W. McGee

PhD Politics 2003

Robert W. McGee is a professor of accounting at Fayetteville State University, North Carolina, USA. He has had more than 50 years of experience working in a variety of capacities, including public accounting, corporate accounting, tax law, banking, consulting and education.

Clients include the United States Agency for International Development, the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the Central Intelligence Agency.

He has lectured or consulted in more than 30 countries and has earned 13 doctorates from universities in the United States, Eastern and Western Europe, including the University of Sunderland in 2003.

Robert has played an influential role in the politics of Armenia and Bosnia, where he has drafted the accounting law for both countries, has assisted the Finance Ministries to convert their countries to International Financial Reporting Standards and has assisted all the major universities in both countries to upgrade their accounting curriculum to international standards.

He was also responsible for reviewing the accounting law for Mozambique.

Due to work and family commitments he was an external student at the University of Sunderland; still he describes his experience at the Institution as very enjoyable and he remembers his visits here fondly.

“Since I am from the United States, and since some of my ancestors came from England, I have always been interested in this country, its history and culture. Visiting Sunderland allowed me to drink all that in.”

He also explains what attracted him to the University: “In the US system students are stuck with the professors who are on the faculty. Oftentimes, they have to choose a topic that a professor is interested in. However, with the British system I was able to shop around and find a professor at the University of Sunderland who was interested in my topic. I did not have to compromise and research a topic that did not interest me.”

Robert has published more than 60 nonfiction books.

He said: “My degree in Politics provided me with the background I needed to do research in the field but also to write political thrillers as well as scholarly books and papers in the field. My first novel, Justifiable Homicide: A Political Thriller, made the Amazon Best-Seller list in the Mystery and Thriller category. My second novel, Annie and the Senator, also made the Amazon Best-Seller in this same category."

Several studies have ranked Robert #1 in the world for accounting ethics and business ethics research. He has also competed in karate tournaments in both the Shukokai (Japanese) and Taekwondo (Korean) styles and won, at age 70, in a single weekend, world championships in 3 styles – taekwondo (Korean), kung fu (Chinese), and karate (Japanese), and silver medaled in tai chi. He is now 76 and is a world champion in karate, taekwondo, kung fu and tai chi (both Yang and Sun styles).

Robert was inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame in July 2017. And his career gold medal count is 973 as of May 2023. He is still competing and hopes to get to 1000 medals by the end of 2023.

In May 2023 an article studied the research impact among the top 1000 economist researchers. Robert ranked #9 in the world in terms of research impact, ahead of 80 of the 84 Nobel Prize winners included in the survey.
