Anne Newton
BSc (Hons) Chemical and Pharmaceutical Science 1990
Anne Newton works as a Costing and Data Modelling Lead Analyst for Yorkshire Water and is also an active STEM ambassador in West Yorkshire promoting technical careers, particularly those in the water industry, to secondary school pupils.
She informally mentors younger colleagues in the workplace to ensure they get the support they need. She is also on the Institute of Water Northern Area committee, an Assessor for Continuing Professional Development records and organises local events.
She explained: “I collate financial and engineering data from completed projects to build mathematical models. These are then deployed to provide the cost of new or upgrades to reservoirs, clean and wastewater treatment works, networks, sewers and sludge treatment facilities across the Yorkshire region. It is an interesting role at the heart of the water industry capital investment programme.”
After graduating from the University of Sunderland, Anne worked for a year as a research chemist in the pharmaceutical industry and then went onto to complete an MSc in Water Treatment Process Engineering at another university. After a 20 year career break, Anne returned to a full time technical role.
Anne was attracted to the then Sunderland Polytechnic as she was interested in Chemistry.
She explained: “I thought an industrial placement would be useful to get experience and hopefully lead to a job, which it did. I still remember the supportive staff in the Chemistry department and great course mates.”
Anne´s advice to current students entering the job market is: “Take advantage of all the careers facilities while at University- CV and application letter, LinkedIn profile, competency questions, preparation for interviews etc.
“Make the most of industrial placements/work experience opportunities for increasing knowledge, experience and networking. Voluntary work of any type can help as it provides a talking point, shows you have other interests and can be a way of gaining or improving skills outside the workplace.”
Asked about her future plans, Anne said: “I hope to continue this journey as it has already lead to some exciting places!”
