What does the word ‘alumni’ mean?
‘Alumni’ is usually used to refer to a group of graduates of either one or both genders, while ‘alumnus’traditionally refers to a single male graduate, with the feminine term being ‘alumna’.It comes from the Latin verb ‘alere’,meaning to nourish and was first used in the context of former pupils of school and colleges in the 1600’s.
Becoming a member
After graduation, you will become a lifetime member of the Alumni Association. Membership is free and automatic so wherever you find yourself in the future you will be part of our alumni community.

More than 160,000 students have graduated from the University of Sunderland since its early beginnings as a Technical College back in 1901.
