Where Are You Now?

Jack Sanger

Jack Sanger
Cert Education 1965

After a successful career in academia, Jack is now enjoying his retirement living in the Pyrenees in the south of France and writing fiction. Jack is the published author of a trilogy entitled Azimuth, that has been followed by four further novels and a dozen short stories.

Jack was Professor and Director of The Centre for Organisational Research at Anglia Ruskin UniversityAfter a period of six years, he left the University to work as an international management consultant, and then he became a writer of fiction.

He explained: “During my time at Anglia Ruskin University I published academic papers and books on research methods, computer games and videos.

Jack completed his Certificate of Education at the Sunderland College of Education between 1962 and 1965. He recalls the College was a happy blend of academic and social life.

He said: “I was in one of the first cohorts of men – outnumbered 3-1. We worked a little and played hard. I remember Dennis Farrelly and Mr Coggrave both very bright English Literature tutors. I also remember fellow students such as Ron Coles (radio entrepreneur) and Allan Ahlberg (children’s author) and many many others, male and female.

Asked about his abiding memories of Sunderland and his time living in the City, Jack replied: “Producing the Sunderland Rag Show at the Empire, drinking in the Palatine, and being in an R&B band with Coles, Shackleton and Lee.”

His advice to current students on how to get a foot on the career ladder is to stay five years in a job and then move on. He said: “Look for niche areas to establish your reputation. Don’t be hung up on your subject area. Try to be creative.”

Jack’s resolutions for the future are to keep sharp, write songs, poems and stories.

He concluded: “I want to write an epic poem on Space, Time and a doomed Earth.”
