Neil works as a Special Education Needs & Disabilities (SEND) lecturer for Durham County Council.
He said: “I am a passionate SEN Teacher with a comprehensive background in working with wide range of SEN needs and a strong commitment to learning. I have a strong academic background in SEND. I have researched and implemented innovative assessment, learning and teaching methods. I am a proficient researcher and communicator concerning educational activities.
“My biggest achievement to date is working in almost all roles within SEND including teaching assistant, HLTA, Teacher and Lecturer. I have worked in outstanding specialist provisions and worked alongside some incredible teachers and support staff.”
Neil, who has completed three degrees from the University of Sunderland, said that one of his biggest challenges has been combining his studies part-time alongside his full-time job.
“Learning to juggle work commitments alongside study is a skill that I learned over time!” he said.
The Sunderland graduate, originally from Murton in County Durham, was attracted to the University of Sunderland after visiting the facilities on a couple of open days.
He explained: “The staff were friendly and answered all my questions and felt that this was the university for me. I have enjoyed all three of my courses at the University, especially the support from the staff. Their support, passion and subject knowledge have inspired me to further study and research.”
Neil’s advice to recent graduates entering the job market is to go for every opportunity that is available.
He advised: “Volunteering, helping with research and contacting key people are all tips that can help when entering the job market.”
Asked about his plans, Neil concluded: “I would like to enrol onto a PhD at some point in the future, potentially doing a professional doctorate or research into a SEND area.”
