Liz Williamson

Professor Liz Williamson

BSc Pharmacy 1978

Professor Liz Williamson registered in 1978 and gained her PhD in medicinal plant research at the University of London School of Pharmacy. She worked in hospital and community pharmacy as a superintendent pharmacist before returning to academia as Senior Lecturer in Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy at the University of London's School of Pharmacy in 2004.

In 2005, she was appointed Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Reading, where she also served as Director of Pharmacy Practice. Her research interests are natural, including herbal, medicines and their interactions with prescription medicines. She is a member and former Chair of the Herbal and Complementary Medicines Expert Advisory Group to the British Pharmacopoeia Commission. She also advises the World Health Organization on herbal medicine interactions with conventional drugs. Liz was involved with the journal Phytotherapy Research since its inception in 1987, as Editor from 1997-2017, and remains on the editorial board.

Liz puts her academic career down to the influence of Sunderland staff member Betty Jackson, who persuaded her to do a PhD. On Dr Jackson's death, Liz stated: “I will always be grateful to her for this, and for giving me the chance to spend my life working with medicinal plants as one of that rare breed — a pharmacognosist.”
