The Futures Fund: Ridiculously amazing!

Yan Ying Khoo

Fourth year Pharmacy student Yan Ying Khoo spent last summer working for the NHS, thanks to financial support from the Futures Fund.

Ying, 22, from Malaysia, received the DOSH (Development Office Scholarship) funding for living and travel expenses, allowing her to spend her placement in an NHS hospital.

“It came at the right time when I needed financial help the most,” says Ying. “I have had the best placement ever!

“I have had endless support from various university services. They were all RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING. They are, namely International Student Support, Gateway, Future Fund, University Library Services and Sunderland Futures. They have always been so patient in getting my queries sorted. I never felt alone whenever I am stuck with a problem because they were always trying their best to support me. I am immensely thankful.”

The Futures Fund in now open for applications. To find out more - and about our other DOSH scholarships on offer to current students - click HERE.

“Just go and apply for it if you think you need financial support for an experience that you believe will benefit you,” says Ying. “University is not just about getting a degree, it's more about networking and having the experience and soft skills needed for future employment. It's the prime time to widen your horizon and look beyond uni.

“I am a massive fan of the NHS, it is a blessing to the nation and I want to protect the NHS at all costs by being a Pharmacist. I want to improve public health by going above and beyond in providing patients with a better managed healthcare. I wish to pay forward and utilise what I have learned from my MPharm degree to contribute back to the society. ”
