Sunderland alumnus empowers fashion with personal narrative

Usmaan Ali

Usmaan Ali, a talented designer and garment maker from a South Asian Bengali background, is making waves in the fashion industry after pursuing his dream at the University of Sunderland. Usmaan’s journey signifies not only his ambition but also the changing landscape of fashion where diverse voices are increasingly celebrated.

Born with a passion for sewing and garment making, Usmaan has always sought to express meaningful narratives through his work. His dedication to encapsulating deep emotions and stories has been a driving force behind his creative projects. One of his most impactful works, the “Unsung Heroes” project, pays tribute to the memories of the First World War. He curated a fashionable military jacket featuring intricate gold metal embroidery and a detachable cape from which poppies cascade. The dressings finished with a 3-metre skirt with a sea of poppies coming up the train. Embellished with red crystals leaves and clear crystals engraved with initials of war heroes and British Red Cross nurses.

Usmaan said: “This experience allowed me to shine not only to people who are just looking at my work but myself for being able to shop my full potential.”

Usmaan’s acceptance into the fashion programme at Sunderland was bolstered during his interview with lecturer Jayne, who recognised his potential after reviewing just a glimpse of his portfolio. Inspired by this connection, Usmaan went on to thrive in an environment that nurtures creativity and innovation.

With the generous support of the Futures Fund Employability scholarship, Usmaan has been able to alleviate the financial burdens that come with relocating to London. The funding enabled him to cover essential expenses, allowing him to get through his first month.

Currently employed at Kai Collective as a designer and garment maker, Usmaan is crafting custom garments that reflect his unique style and vision. His aspiration to showcase his work on television speaks to his determination to reach wider audiences and make his mark in the fashion world.

He concluded: “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the donors of the Development Trust who have generously provided the funds for my scholarship programme. Many of these donors were once students here, just like me, and their contributions have made a significant difference in my academic journey. Your support has not only alleviated financial problems but also provided me with opportunities that have enriched my graduate experience in countless ways.”

As Usmaan continues to evolve as a designer, he remains committed to creating pieces that resonate with people on a profound level, affirming his belief that fashion can tell powerful stories.
