Chris launches successful radio career thanks to the Futures Fund

Chris Howard

A dedicated Media Production alumnus from the University of Sunderland proudly shares his remarkable journey in radio broadcasting, made possible by the generous support of donors through the Futures Fund Experience Scholarship.

Chris Howard, who graduated in 2023, began his Media Production studies at the University in 2020, during the Covid pandemic.

He reflected: “From the moment I attended an Open Day as a 14-year-old student, I knew this was the place I wanted to study. I am so happy that I pursued my goal. I learned so much on my course, covering all aspects of media and combining many of my interests, from creating documentaries and radio shows to discussing football in the TV studios.”

Chris’s journey led him to Spark, the university’s vibrant student radio station, where he developed his skills and found his true calling.

He explained: “In 2023, I attended the Student Radio Conference in Exeter and won a competition called 'DemoFactor.' This was a crucial step in my career, as it opened doors and initiated conversations with key industry figures, including Aled Haydn Jones, the Head of BBC Radio 1.”

This breakthrough opportunity allowed Chris to present two shows over Christmas on BBC Radio 1, eventually leading to him taking over the Early Breakfast Show every Friday throughout February 2023.

He said: “This required me to travel from the north-east to London on Thursday afternoons, stay at a hotel, and wake up at 3 am to arrive at the Radio 1 studio at BBC Broadcasting House by 4 am. I have NEVER been happier to wake up early in my life. Without the generosity of donors, the financial burden of this opportunity would have forced me to decline it, which has substantially advanced my career.”

Chris’s experience not only enhanced his career but also equipped him with technical skills and industry insights. Upon returning to Spark, he shared his knowledge by mentoring fellow students and organising training sessions to help them succeed in this year’s DemoFactor competition.

He said: “As I write this, I’m on the train back from this year's conference in Leeds, which was a great success for Spark. The students I helped in the training sessions had their demos played and received excellent feedback from the judges and industry professionals. I wouldn’t have gained these insights to share with others at the university without the opportunities this scholarship has provided.”

One standout moment came during an appearance on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Greg James, where Chris highlighted the exceptional work at Spark. “Talking about our achievements on a national platform was exhilarating and showcased the incredible talent emerging from the University of Sunderland,” Chris reflected.

Looking ahead, Chris is in discussions with BBC Radio 1 about future opportunities, and interactions with other leading radio stations are developing as a direct result of his exposure. With a commitment to mentorship, he aims to support his peers as they navigate their own paths in media.

Chris concluded: “I would like to personally thank the donors that have made this possible, you have quite literally made my career and given me the ability to achieve my dream job.”
