Daniel Tye

BA History 2013

Parliamentary Assistant to Sharon Hodgson MP

After graduating Daniel spent his summer as an intern in Parliament, and was then offered the role of Parliamentary Assistant to Sharon Hodgson MP, Labour MP for Washington and Sunderland West and Shadow Minister for Women & Equalities.

“My job predominately involves co-ordinating the work of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups that Sharon chairs,” explains Daniel. “I also draft policy letters to constituents, draft speeches, deal with constituent enquiries and provide assistance to Sharon in her Shadow Ministerial role.”

Daniel believes that as well as his degree, the voluntary work he undertook at Sunderland was a key factor in him landing his current role.

“I was able to develop my initiative, ability to stay calm in difficult situations and have a professional ability to work with different personalities and sections of society – all important skills essential in a world where one minute I will be in a meeting with Government ministers to being on the phone to a disgruntled constituent the next.

“What Sunderland gave me was the opportunity to grow as a person by giving me a high-class degree education, career development and life opportunities that have helped me succeed since graduating.
