What to do (and not to do) at graduation

Elliot Harris

Congratulations to second year Graphic Design student Elliot Harris who won the Alumni Association's Graduation Video Competition.

Elliot, 22, from Redditch produced a video showing the dos and don'ts of graduation, and the advice and support on offer to the Class of 2017.

Elliot’s video played at the Stadium of Light during the graduations week, and was also available on the University’s social media channels.

The Alumni Team approached students to get their ideas on how to advise graduating students on what to do on their big day - and to give them some guidance on their next steps after graduation.

Elliot said: "I was largely inspired by my own experience of my brother's graduation ceremony, everyone running round rushing to be ready, running late, then the buzz and excitement of the day."

Asked about his creative process Elliot commented: “The most important aspect of my creative process is thinking. I like to begin the project by spending time analysing the brief, after which I spend most of my time thinking about ideas. Once I begin generating ideas, I continue to do so throughout the entirety of the project. The time I then spend experimenting with my idea is often a very quick process as a result, which allows me to spend time looking at my designs, making informed decisions and adjustments, paying attention to the finer details of my work.”

The 22-year-old was originally attracted to the University by both the staff and facilities.

“The staff appeared friendly, enthusiastic on interview days and I have found them incredibly helpful and supportive ever since I started, whilst there are a wide range of facilities that offer exciting opportunities for potential projects,” he explained.

Elliot, who has just completed his second year, is having a relaxing summer and recharging ready for next year.

I'd like to have a holiday but in the meantime I plan to get more active playing sports, whilst also beginning to work towards my final year of study,” he concluded.
