We Care at Christmas 2022

Staff, students, graduates and friends of the University of Sunderland are coming together this Christmas to support some of the most vulnerable members of their university community. The We Care at Christmas appeal was launched this week by the University’s We Care team and Development Office to support care experienced and estranged students at the University’s Sunderland and London campuses.

Sunderland staff, students, graduates and supporters are coming together for these students over Christmas, and are hoping to smash last year’s total of £11,145.

Sir David Bell, the University’s Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive said: “The We Care at Christmas appeal is an opportunity to remind our care-experienced and estranged students that they really matter to us and are valued and important members of the University community.

“Some of these students will find the holiday season really difficult. It is a time they might spend alone, perhaps without a card, gift, festive meal or companionship. If our students have families, it is a particularly difficult time trying to provide for their children, while making Christmas special.

“This year, of course, that task of making Christmas special is made all the more difficult by the current cost of living crisis. The money raised this Christmas by private and public donations, including toys supplied by Mission Christmas, will support 177 students and 45 children.”

Sir David added: “I never cease to be amazed by the big-heartedness and generosity of the University of Sunderland.”
