MSc Project Management 2024

Position and company: Project Manager at Cambridge University Press & Assessment

Mina Soleyman, a recent graduate from the University of Sunderland, has successfully transitioned from academia to a career in project management. She secured a position as a Project Manager at Cambridge University Press & Assessment. Graduating with Distinction in her MSc in Project Management in 2024, Mina demonstrates the excellence of the university's academic programmes and support systems.

Originally from Nishapur, Iran, Mina decided to move to the UK to complete her master’s and did thorough research on universities offering project management courses.

She explained: “The University of Sunderland met most of the criteria I was looking for. It offered high-quality teaching, excellent facilities including labs and academic support, and most importantly, had a strong graduate employment rate. The affordability of the course and the university’s focus on graduate development through initiatives like the Centre for Graduate Prospects also influenced my decision. It stood out as a place that balanced academic quality with real-world outcomes.”

Before pursuing her master’s degree, Mina had worked as a project manager in both the banking and education sectors. However, realising the need for a deeper theoretical understanding of project management, she decided to enhance her knowledge by enrolling in a master’s programme.

"The collaborative nature of the course was a highlight for me," she shared. "The modules combined lectures with hands-on workshops, which helped us apply what we’d learned in practical ways. In one core module—ENGM91: Project Management and Control—we worked in teams, received weekly project updates, and had to update our Gantt charts and make key decisions based on limited information, just like in real-life projects. It challenged our decision-making, teamwork, and conflict resolution skills—essential abilities for any project manager.”

Mina added: “Working closely with classmates from diverse backgrounds helped me become more culturally aware, which is invaluable when managing cross-functional and international teams. It taught me how to collaborate effectively in multicultural environments.”

Mina’s advice for prospective students considering the University of Sunderland is to definitely apply. She emphasizes: “The University provides a well-rounded learning experience with knowledgeable lecturers and a curriculum that’s intensive but rewarding. It’s a one-year programme, so the pace is fast, and students need to stay focused and proactive. Join student associations, build connections, and make the most of the support systems in place. Whether it’s the staff, lecturers, or the Centre for Graduate Prospects, help is always there—but you have to take the first step.”

Shortly after graduation, Mina secured a position as a Project Manager at Cambridge University Press & Assessment. She is also currently working toward her PMQ qualification and aspires to become a Chartered Project Professional.

In response to the challenges faced by job seekers and recent graduates, this ambitious professional has launched an initiative called CareerSol. The platform hosts monthly online events featuring industry professionals who offer guidance on job searching and career advancement. "I wanted to give back and provide the same support that I received during my journey," Mina explained.

CareerSol is open to graduates, job seekers, and anyone considering a career transition. The initiative is fostering a community of learners and professionals, with a strong presence on LinkedIn.

Reflecting on her time at the University of Sunderland, Mina remarked: “It was a transformative year—full of growth, learning, and meaningful connections. It helped me become a more competent and confident project manager and played a key role in helping me secure the role I was aiming for.”
