Dr Matthew Crum

MPharm Pharmacy 2010

Whilst at Sunderland, Matt served as SPSA Treasurer and President, which included the challenge of hosting its 75th anniversary events in 2010. He was also BPSA Treasurer and Vice President. After graduating, Matt undertook a split pre-registration placement between AstraZeneca and the University Hospital of South Manchester. The pre-clinical formulation projects at AZ inspired a career in pharmaceutical science. After a short stint as a community pharmacist in mid-Wales, Matt relocated to Melbourne, Australia to undertake a PhD in Drug Delivery, Pharmaceutics at Monash University.

Matt was then offered a role on the Pfizer Research & Development two-year graduate programme, which included diverse and challenging cross-functional assignments across the drug development lifecycle at the Pfizer manufacturing site in Melbourne. Matt was also able to complete an international six-month assignment at the Lake Forest site in Chicago, Illinois and the Pfizer World Headquarters in Manhattan, New York.

Matt now works at Pfizer as a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) in the Rare Disease portfolio. His role is to liaise between stakeholders including healthcare professionals, researchers, and other key opinion leaders, to engender effective communication between Pfizer and healthcare professionals.

“Obtaining my Master of Pharmacy degree at Sunderland has laid solid foundations for where I am today. The confidence gained in part from the support and encouragement of University staff to pursue a PhD and to undertake it overseas. I cannot forget to mention the many friendships made at Sunderland. Living overseas and differences in time zones, even if we have not spoken in some instances for years, the catchups feel only like it was yesterday since we last spoke.”
