Dr Elizabeth Dent
BSc Psychology 2016
MSc Psychological Research Methods 2017
PhD 2022
Elizabeth is a lecturer at the University of Sunderland within the School of Psychology. She teaches seminars at foundation and undergraduate level.
Her PhD explored the psychosocial impact of gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.
Before starting her PhD, Elizabeth worked as a research assistant for two separate members of staff. She also worked as an exam invigilator at Durham University.
Elizabeth was drawn to the University following attendance at an open day.
She explained: “I had attended similar open day events at other Universities located in the North East but felt immediately at home at the University of Sunderland. I enjoyed my time as an undergraduate and my love for the University was cemented during my MSc.”
She added: “The teaching staff are excellent, going above and beyond for students. Seeing how knowledgeable and passionate they are influenced and inspired me to continue my academic career.”
For Elizabeth completing her PhD has been one of greatest achievements to date.
Her advice for recent graduates entering the job market is to show all the skills they gained during their studies.
“These will help you appeal to employers from a wide variety of fields. Show off the skills you have, for example, your excellent understanding of human behaviour, communication skills and problem solving. You are an asset to any team!”.
