Katie Elliott
BA (Hons) Fashion Journalism 2013
Katie graduated from BA Fashion Journalism in 2013. She now works as a Content Executive for Jet2.com and Jet2holidays.
This is how Katie describes her fast paced and varied role: “I feel lucky to spend my days doing something that I love. I work in a team of eight writers, creating copy for everything from the Jet2holidays brochures, to customer emails, blog posts, website destination guides and even celebrity scripts!”
Who wouldn’t love working for a company that provides opportunities to travel. In one year Katie has travelled to Prague, Majorca, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Malta. “It’s incredible to be able to see the world as part of my job,” says Katie.
When Katie graduated from the University of Sunderland she thought London would provide her with the opportunity to become a fully-fledged writer. However, this proved to be difficult:
“Despite the size of the city, I found it hard to find a role as a writer, as I was a graduate without the experience the big companies were looking for. Eventually I was lucky enough to land a writing role at John Lewis Head Office which was amazing experience. I worked here for almost two years.”
We asked Katie about her time at the University and how it has helped her to get where she is today:
“Back in 2010, there were very few universities running a Fashion Journalism course, but I chose the University of Sunderland. It was a small class of around 15 people! The course was creative and challenging and I was over the moon to leave with a 1st Class Honours in 2013. My course leaders Julie Bradford and Carole Watson were an amazing support throughout my time at University. It was really good to have mentors who were available to speak to on a personal level as well as any guidance I needed on coursework.”
Katie hopes to progress her career at Jet2.com and Jet2holidays and develop her skills as a writer. She has also written a children’s book which she hopes to get published.
Katie has this advice for those hoping to work in a similar field:
“Get as much experience as you can. I worked in local and regional newspapers, a national magazine… I even wrote copy for a European removals company before I landed a job in fashion or travel. Be enthusiastic in interviews, do your research and show that company why they can’t afford to not hire you! “
