Brother and Sister flying high after graduating together

Brother and sister graduate together

Brother and Sister Mohammad and Ahaad Alsharabi came to the North East from Saudi Arabia in 2012, and have graduated together from the University of Sunderland after three ‘unforgettable’ years.

Mohammad completed a Mechanical Engineering degree and is now working as an Aircraft Engineer for GDC Middle East – a renowned aircraft modifications and technology company approved for the next generation of planes by both Airbus and Boeing.

He said: “It was honestly one of the best experiences of my life. I am so glad I chose the University of Sunderland; I have made lifelong friends that I'm still in touch with and enjoyed every term.

“Sunderland was the right place for me because, to me, it was the perfect place for a student. By that I mean everything you need is a few steps away from the city centre, and both campuses are close by.

“The Engineering department has some great lecturers that are always willing to help as long as you're willing to put in the effort. I hope that one day my name will be recognised in the aviation industry so I can make my parents even prouder.”

The 21-year-old is flying back specially from a business trip in Dallas, Texas, to graduate in Sunderland alongside his sister.

Ahaad studied Business Computing at the University of Sunderland and is now working for cable company Middle East Specialized Cables (MESC) back home in Saudi Arabia. The 23-year-old is now hoping to return to the University to study a Masters degree, and then a PhD.

She said: “I had an amazing time. I’ve been taught by the best tutors, met the greatest people and made friends for life. My tutors were great and always supportive; whether it was the way they taught us or just as academics, they would always motivate me to do better and better with their encouragement. I would always prove to myself I can do this! And I did.

“Sunderland is one of the most beautiful cities in England. There was always something to do and places to see, we were never bored - definitely some unforgettable memories.”

The winter graduation ceremonies held at the Stadium of Light between November 25 - 27 in Sunderland are an opportunity for graduates to celebrate their success with friends, family and loved ones. During the three days over 700 students graduated at an event which attracted an estimated 1,300 visitors to the region from around the globe.
