A Sunderland student has been selected from thousands worldwide to take part in an innovative leadership summer school in London.
BA (Hons) Social Media Management student George Fee, 21, was among 60 scholars chosen from 21,000 applications from the UK, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico, who took part in the Santander Summer Experience at Kings College.
The programme looked at the themes of leadership, creativity, and innovation, giving students a platform to develop and reflect on their own leadership styles, and prepare for their professional futures.
George, from Cleator in Cumbria, just about to enter the final year of her studies at the University of Sunderland. She explained how she got involved:
“I signed up through an email I received from Santander. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but I am incredibly proud of myself for even being selected. It was a great achievement for me.”
The two-week, fully funded course was based at King’s College London. Students attended expert-led workshops and lectures, covering topics such as global governance, international relations, global politics, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and negotiation.
Scott Burnett, Santander Universities Relationship Manager told us:
“The Kings Summer Experience was designed specifically for Santander Universities and brings together remarkable and talented scholars from across the globe. The key themes of leadership and creativity teaches students how to adapt their thinking to cope with the challenges of the future.
“This year’s cohort never failed to impress throughout the two weeks of the programme, and I am confident the skills and knowledge that George took away will benefit her greatly in the next steps of her journey. I look forward to following her success with keen interest.”
Speaking about her experience George continued:
“I met some amazing people and have been taught by extremely knowledgeable and intelligent professors. I learned so much about the world and how to become a successful leader.”
When asked if George would recommend the experience to other students she replied:
“My advice to students would be to absolutely go for it. If they have the opportunity to apply, they have nothing to lose and so much to gain. The application process is so easy, and the experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
