Futures Fund Case Study: Srihari Daivanayagam

Sports journalism has always been Srihari’s passion. Thanks to the Futures Fund the 22-year-old was able to fulfil one of his dreams completing a three-week placement at BBC Sport in Salford.

Srihari was delighted when he found out he had been chosen to complete a placement at the MediaCityUK in Salford. Having difficulties to fund this opportunity himself, the Sunderland graduate applied to the Futures Fund.

Srihari’s role mainly involved writing reports, monitoring media reaction and helping out with live coverage of sporting events, such as the UEFA Europe League, the Roland Garros – French Open, the Canadian Grand Prix and the test match between England and New Zealand.

“Every single day of my placement at the BBC gave me fresh insight into the various facets of the website and how the content is produced. I also got to interact with some of the sharpest minds in the industry, who were all approachable and made me feel at home.

“Whether it was listening to interviews and transcribing them immediately or monitoring Twitter, the experience was eye-opening.

“Assistant Editor Phil Gordos ensured that I was always kept busy during my three weeks at Salford, which enlightened me about the presence of a multitude of roles played by a journalist, aside from merely writing articles.”

“I would like to thank the Futures Fund scholarship for giving me the wonderful opportunity to learn my trade at the BBC working with some of the best journalists in the UK, something any budding sports journalist would dream of.”

After coming back to his home country, India, Srihari got a job as a Cricket Content Manager at SportsKeeda.com, based out of Bangalore.
