Futures Fund Case Study: Catherine & Joe

In 2013 the fund supported two talented Animation & Design students to make the trip of a lifetime to California, USA, to attend training with the masters of digital animation from major studios including Pixar, Duncan and Duck.

Catherine said “The Pixar masterclass was incredible. The amount of information we received was immense.  I came out of the experience with more motivation than ever to create new things. The tutors were helpful in the technical side of animation but also on how to make the right impression through your work and design the best portfolio and showreel for the job.”

Her friend and fellow student Joe said “These were amazing opportunities and gave us real insight into working in a successful studio in America. From the experiences we gained insightful knowledge, international recognition and strong contacts for our future careers.”

Catherine has since worked with the University to showcase some of her design work.  We were delighted to learn that she also received an award for Best Student Animation at the 2014 Royal Television Society Awards.  Her animation piece explores interaction and social needs: how our actions affect others, based around a lonely character who wants to make friends with the sun.

Catherine and Joe both want to express their thanks for the support which has initated an award winning start to their careers.
