Depending on when you left us, today's University in Sunderland may be almost unrecognisable to you.  Whilst the campus and buildings of the University may be different, we believe the ethos of the University remains the same. 

The University has provided higher education in the city since 1901, and we are widely seen as an innovative, accessible and inspirational university.  We think you’ll agree that the University is, and always has been, a truly life-changing University. 

For the 2013-2014 academic year, the University had 19,905 students and 1,291 staff, studying and working respectively over 3 campuses.  These include the City Campus and Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s in Sunderland, plus the London Campus in London Docklands. Over £130m has been invested in the three sites over the past 20 years.

Facts & Figures

The University's Wearmouth Hall was demolished in 2008/2009 and the site is now occupied by CitySpace, the University's sports and functions facility.

Sunderland is renowned as a centre for training teachers (for over 112 years), pharmacists, PR professionals, journalists and engineering.

Sunderland is in the top 5 Transnational Education providers in the UK. Over 5,500 students currently study on our programmes in 20 partner institutions from Trinidad to Russia and Malaysia.

The National Glass Centre is part of the University and following a £2.25million refurbishment increased visitor numbers by 60%.

The University's renowned Media Centre was one of first in the UK to be entirely digital and is home to the set from TV show Blue Peter.

Faculty of Business & Law was deemed the best Business School in Northern England (The Guardian Guide, 2012) and runs one of the UK's best tourism degrees.

The University's London Campus based in Canary Wharf is home to around 1,000 students studying a variety of business modules.
