Briony Hudson

An evening with pharmacy historian Briony Hudson and Emeritus Professor Malcolm Hooper

Scheduled campus-based activity (to be reviewed in line with Government pandemic guidance)

Join independent pharmacy historian and curator Briony Hudson in conversation with Emeritus Professor Malcolm Hooper. Briony is the author of the Sunderland Pharmacy Centenary brochure and in this event will talk to Professor Hooper about the history of Pharmacy over the years. Prof Hooper trained as a Pharmacist but spent most of his career teaching and researching at the University of Sunderland. Ultimately, he was appointed Emeritus Professor in Medicinal Chemistry.  He is best known for his advocacy related to Gulf War syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndromes.

Pharmacy exhibition at Beamish live tour


The curator at Beamish Museum will take you on a virtual tour around a typical Edwardian chemist business, with dispensary and aerated water sections. Some pieces from the display were donated by the School of Pharmacy at Sunderland. The tour will be followed by a Q&A session.

This year's speaker will be Anne Black who will talk about life as a Pharmacist in the COVID era. Anne graduated from the University of Sunderland in 1991 and is now Regional Quality Assurance Specialist Pharmacist - North East & North Cumbria, and Chair of the Pan UK Pharmacy Working Group for ATMPs.

This year we will be hosting a second Hope Winch Annual Lecture at the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. The speaker will be Dr Stephen Jones, ex Group Chief Executive Officer, Veriton Pharmaceuticals. Dr Jones will be talking about both the personal and professional opportunities and experiences he has had as a result of graduating from Sunderland with a Pharmacy degree in 1981. The Lecture will be followed by the opening of the Pharmacy exhibition at Museum to illustrate the 100th years of Pharmacy education at Sunderland.

Hope Winch Centenary dinner

The culmination of the celebrations weekend will be the Hope Winch Centenary dinner. Registration for the event will be from 7pm. The AGM will also precede the dinner. The dinner will include a drinks reception, three-course meal and wine. We are encouraging anniversary groups to re-unite at this special event.

An Evening with Andrew Lane

On 25th of February we held the first of our Centenary events, with special guest - Andrew Lane, chair of the National Pharmacy Association. Andrew discussed the challenges and opportunities for Community Pharmacy throughout 2021 and beyond. We also had a Q&A session at the end.

International Women's Day - Hope Winch

Dr Yitka Graham, Head of Helen McArdle Nursing and Care Residential Institute and Associate Professor for Health Services Research, delivers a presentation on International Women's Day 2021 about Women Leaders in Health for Sunderland. She talks about Hope Constance Monica Winch who set up the Sunderland Pharmacy department in 1921.
