Where Are You Now?

Adarsh Chuttooar

Adarsh Chuttooar

BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering 2014

Adarsh Chuttooar’s career has gone from strength to strength since he graduated in 2014 with a First class degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Adarsh kick-started his career with a role as a Thermal Research Engineer at the US giant Thermacore, a world-leading technology company, whose clients include NASA and the European Space Agency. He joined the company thorough the University’s Graduate Internship Scheme and carried out research on a new method of domestic heating system that uses less energy.

After he finished his Internship, Adarsh went back to his origins in Mauritius where he now works for the French oil and gas company Total as a Maintenance Engineer.

“I’m responsible for the preventive and curative maintenance of all plant equipment within three fuel depots at one of the world’s leading oil and gas companies. I also enforce safety standards on the plant through personnel training and application of preventive strategies, and I manage contractors to carry out repairs and installation of equipment within the plant facility,” he explained.

Talking about his greatest achievement to date, the 27-year-old said: “Finishing my degree and designing a trans-tibial prosthetic leg for my final year project was rewarded with a University prize, the SIEM Award.”

Adarsh took full advantage of the range of extra-curricular activities the University had to offer and also did an industrial placement year which, he believes, contributed to securing his job at Thermacore.

“I did my Industrial Placement year at GlaxoSmithKline where I worked as a Project Engineer for the installation and commissioning of Pharmaceutical Production Equipment.

Getting into a job is only the first step. The working world is real life – totally different from student life.”

He added: “The University of Sunderland has excellent facilities. I had the chance to use a 3D printer, meet excellent helpful staff and the university community is vibrant and international.”

Now, his career sights are firmly set on becoming a Chartered Engineer and has also started a Master’s Degree at the University of Cambridge.
