Royal Society of Chemistry seminar series - Hydrogels: From small molecules to soft materials

Thursday, January 31, 2019 17:00 - 18:00
Time Zone: Europe/London
Local Time: Thursday, January 31, 2019 17:00 - 18:00

With Dr Alison A. Edwards, Senior Lecturer, Medway School of Pharmacy. Book your free ticket via eventbrite

Hydrogels are functional materials used in applications from healthcare to home and personal care products. Most commercial hydrogels are polymeric displaying polydispersity and irreversible gelation.

Hydrogels can also form by self-assembly of low molecular weight molecules (hydrogelators) which can be readily modified (e.g. for alternative gelation triggers) and have reversible gelation. These features provide significant promise for tailored application.

Alison’s research involves the identification and development of novel hydrogelators, many of which are aromatic carbohydrate amphiphiles which are composed of biocompatible motifs. Alison has now identified a number of robust hydrogelators and are progressing application of their corresponding hydrogels.

This event is free and open to the public. Book your tickets via eventbrite.

Dr Edwards' biography

Alison obtained her BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from the University of Dundee in 1999 and received her DPhil from the University of Oxford in 2003. Prior to appointment at the Medway School of Pharmacy in November 2006, she held a postdoctoral researcher position at Imperial College London.

She is currently module convener for the module ‘Medicines and Disease: Brain, Psychiatry and Eyes’ (2nd year, MPharm). She teaches a range of topics including drug discovery; antiviral and antibacterial therapeutic agents; topical drug delivery; spectroscopy; organic, physical and general chemistry.
