What does the word ‘alumni’ mean?
‘Alumni’ is usually used to refer to a group of graduates of either one or both genders, while ‘alumnus’traditionally refers to a single male graduate, with the feminine term being ‘alumna’.It comes from the Latin verb ‘alere’,meaning to nourish and was first used in the context of former pupils of school and colleges in the 1600’s.Today alumni help their universities in a variety of ways including acting as advocates for their degree programmes, organising events and supporting current students through mentoring and careers advice to name but a few.
